Outsource Company Formed
A design and manufacturing outsourcing firm was formed by combining several under utilized businesses.
MBD created and led a new LLC that integrated the recently available key personnel from an experienced
technology based firm
with personnel from a recently layed-off manufacturing department.
Unfulfilled contracts and interim facilities alolowed the LLC to be formed with no external investment capital.
By carfully managing the integration, agressively marketing the services, and closely
controlling the cash flow, new contracts fund the ongoing LLC operations.
MBD’s business and business development experience complemented the company’s technological strength.
New Biotechnology Company
A large pharmaceutical firm was seeking to spin off key technologies as a new business venture. We were
contacted to write the initial business plan and to evaluate the market for the company’s product. After
evaluating their technology we found several ways to expand the product line and differing ways to
successfully bring products to market. Our business expertise helped develop the complete organizational
structure, identified funding requirements, determined market pricing and identified good sales prospects.
Evaluation and
Improvement of Business Plan
MBD was contracted to assist an entrepreneur/inventor review and improve his plan for starting into business.
He had invented new high precision, ultra high-speed, state-of-the art measurement and characterization equipment.
During an initial brainstorming session, several problems were identified. First, was that the initial
product developed was aimed at an extremely depressed market with little hope of significant sales in the near
future (the core technology was judged to be excellent). Second, other markets with higher potential over the
next few years were identified; however significant development would be needed to develop a product to meet
those markets. Third, the business plan drafted by the entrepreneur/inventor needed significant improvements
before it could be presented to any potential investor or other funding source. MBD suggested several remedies
to the problems identified. MBD is currently researching markets and product definitions to meet the needs
of the markets with high profit potential. Additionally, partnerships, licensing, and service contracts are
being investigated.
A MEMS device feasibility
study
A multi-national corporation contracted Medical and Biotech Developments, Inc. to study the feasibility of
the general public using a MEMS device. The device was to be targeted toward running tests to evaluate the
use of personal care products. Based on the results of the MBD study, a project was funded to begin
development of an inexpensive, easy to use, MEMS device with integrated chemistry lab-on-a-chip.
New capillary electrophoresis
system
From product concept we designed, developed and sold the first commercially successful capillary electrophoresis
system (all in 14 months). The effort included all budgeting, staffing, market research,
product definition, literature generation, trade show presentations, and sales (planning, coordination, and
closing). Particular attention was paid to protecting patented technologies and processes with respect
to maximizing long-term profits.
