Sam Burd, P.E.
Sam Burd, President of Medical and Biotech Developments, Inc., has over thirty years bringing medical and
biotech consumables, apparatus and microprocessor controlled instruments to market.
For nine years, Sam lectured in the venture design course E-110 at UC Berkeley. The course focused on starting-up companies,
identifying industry trends, market driven development, strategic brainstorming, and leveraging limited resources.
Then, as a founding member of The Spark Group LLC, Sam applied the methodology developed for E-110 to commercial ventures.
The Group started entrepreneurial companies, spun-off businesses from major corporations, built-up sales of
new technologies based products.
Sam created and taught "Starting as an Independent Consultant", 2-day seminars through UC Berkeley Extension.
Additionally, he has given abbreviated versions of that seminar at both local and national meetings of professional societies.
Sam has managed numerous groups and brought diverse projects to successful completion. He has set-up operations
worldwide and started a number of technology based companies. Sam earned a B. S. in Mechanical Engineering from
Northeastern U. and an MBA from Pepperdine U. He is a registered Professional Engineer (P.E. #M19259) and the co-leader of
the Appropriate Technology Team of Engineers Without Border San Francisco Professionals Chapter.
He was active in
ASME, NSPE, SPE, CaSSS, and AAMI. Sam has 16 issued patents and 6 published papers for medical and
biotech apparatus and procedures.
