Personnel now working at Medical and Biotech Developments, Inc., first started researching the intricacies of micro fluidics in 1965.
Then when we started as an independent consulting firm in the early 1990’s, micro fluidics chips and other MEMS technologies played a
significant role in many of the devices developed. Projects have included devices for capillary electrophoresis, isoelectric focusing,
DNA sequencing, immunoassays, flow cytometry, PCR, proteomics, and cell manipulation.
For chip fabrication from a wide variety of materials, processes we have access to include plastic molding,
laser cutting, configuration etching, and layer laminating. Chips can include electrode integration, circuit connection,
membrane capture, valve formation, and other small component incorporation. Patents issued inventors working
for us cover nanoliter injection, alignments of interchangeable disposables to 5 microns, and uniform fluid distribution to
1,536 micro titer plate wells.
Example of Lab-On-A-Chip development project
A multi-national corporation contracted Medical and Biotech Developments, Inc. to design, prototype, and prove operational usage of a
micro fluidic chip (i.e. lab on a chip). It was be targeted toward evaluating the use of personal care products. This evaluation was
previously run on capital equipment by Ph.D. biochemists.
Goals for the device included that it is disposable (i.e. 10,000 tests/mo.), intuitive to use (i.e. training by simple symbol instructions),
reliable, fool proof, safe, accurate, and inexpensive. Prototypes proved the operational goals were achieved in 7 months.
